Shigmo Spring Festival Goa Konkan
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Shigmo is the spring festival of Goa and the Konkan coast, celebrated by the Goud Saraswat Brahmin, Kunbi, Gowda, and other communities of Goa over fifteen days in March, centered on the Holi full moon, combining processions of folk performances, float parades, and the welcoming of soldiers and farmers returning to their villages after the winter campaign season. The Shigmo procession (Dhalo and Romta) features elaborate tableaux (float) lorries depicting mythological scenes, folk dance troupes, and traditional music ensembles moving through town centers from dawn to dusk. The Ghodemodni horse-mask dance, in which performers wearing ornate horse-head masks and colorful costumes enact a cavalry battle mime, is the signature performance of Shigmo seen at processions across the state. Fugdi is a women's group dance performed in interlocking circles with synchronized clapping, sung with agricultural and devotional verses. The Dhalo is a women's night ritual performed in the light of the full moon, with women dancing in a line holding hands and singing. Traditional Goan foods including Puran Poli, Ukadiche Modak, and coconut-jaggery sweets mark the festival season. Shigmo is the Goan equivalent of the Holi festival found across India but adapted to the fishing and farming rhythms of the coastal monsoon economy.
