Bagheli Folk Music and Ramcharitmanas Recitation Tradition of Satna

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Satna, positioned within the Chitrakoot Ramayana landscape, has a rich tradition of Ramcharitmanas recitation and folk adaptations of the Ramayana story. Local Ramlila performances lasting nine nights draw audiences from across the district. Bagheli folk singers have created a parallel oral tradition of Ramayan-themed songs — Sita ke Sohar celebrating the birth of Sita, Ram Vivah songs for weddings, and Vanvasa laments. The dholak-harmonium ensemble that accompanies these songs is distinct from the more classical styles of UP. Chitrakoot mela, held on Kartik Purnima, is the largest gathering where folk singers compete. Kirtaniya groups maintain nightly recitation sessions at village chaupals throughout the winter months, particularly during the Ramkatha festival circuit.
