Sangrur Malwa Wheat Belt Farming Punjab

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Sangrur district lies at the heart of Punjab's Malwa wheat belt, one of India's most productive agricultural zones, where canal-irrigated flat alluvial soils and timely rabi rainfall support yields of 20 to 25 quintals per acre of HD-2967 and PBW-343 varieties. Sangrur farmers harvest wheat in April with combine harvesters and sell directly to government procurement mandis where the Food Corporation of India purchases at minimum support price. The district's high wheat productivity underpins India's central grain stockpile but has also led to stubble burning controversy as farmers torch residue to quickly prepare fields for the kharif paddy season.
