Sambalpuri Ikat Silk Cotton Weaving Odisha

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Sambalpuri fabric from the Sambalpur region of western Odisha is produced using a traditional bandha (ikat) resist-dyeing technique. Weavers tie warp threads in patterns before dyeing, creating the distinctive blurred geometric and floral designs when woven. GI-tagged, Sambalpuri sarees are made in silk and cotton, known for colours like deep red, turmeric yellow, and indigo. Bapta (Khandua) silk sarees are woven for temple offerings. Weavers of the Bhulia community in Bargarh and Sambalpur are the custodians of this 500-year tradition.
