Salem Steel Rolling and Mini-Mill Artisan Tradition

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Salem district in Tamil Nadu is the centre of India's secondary steel processing industry, with over 200 steel rolling mills and re-rolling mills producing TMT bars, angles, channels, and wire rods from scrap and sponge iron. The industry grew around the Salem Steel Plant (SAIL), established in 1981, which produces specialised stainless steel and silicon steel. Mill workers from Kongu communities have developed exceptional skill in roller setting, pass schedule planning, and heat treatment judgement — knowledge transmitted through apprenticeship on the mill floor. Salem's steel market at Manakkadu is one of India's largest for secondary steel, setting price benchmarks for the region. The district's steel economy supports over 150,000 livelihoods in metal fabrication and construction supply.
