Salawas Village Durrie Flatweave Jodhpur Rajasthan

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Salawas village near Jodhpur in Rajasthan is India's most concentrated durrie (flatweave rug) production center — a village of approximately 5,000 families almost entirely engaged in producing cotton flatweave rugs on pit looms for the export home furnishing market. Salawas durries are characterized by bold striped and geometric patterns in a natural undyed cotton palette — cream, brown, grey, and black from natural cotton fiber varieties — though contemporary production uses vat-dyed cotton yarn for full-spectrum colour. The pit loom setup uses a heavy cotton warp set at 8 to 12 ends per inch. A Salawas durrie achieves its characteristic weight and firmness from tight weft beating. Pattern is created by warp colour variation in stripe durries or by weft colour sequencing in geometric designs. A standard 6 by 9 foot durrie takes a team of two weavers two to three days. Salawas has developed a complete cluster: yarn dyeing workshops, loom workshops for loom repair, washing units for finishing, and a cooperative dispatch center. The cluster supplies major export companies including IKEA (historically), Fair Trade certified buyers, and luxury furniture retailers globally. Over 500 workshops in the village operate as family production units. Training in recycled cotton yarn use for sustainability certification and organic cotton durrie production for premium eco-furnishing market.
