Rudraksha Seed Cultivation Pauri Garhwal Uttarakhand

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) is a sacred seed from a large tree native to the Himalayan forests of Uttarakhand, growing at elevations between 600 and 2,000 meters in Pauri Garhwal, Dehradun, and Haridwar districts. The beaded seeds are used in Hindu and Buddhist prayer malas (rosaries) and amulets. The number of face (mukhi) divisions on the seed determines its rarity and market value, with single-face (Ek Mukhi) seeds worth lakhs of rupees. Uttarakhand produces 70 percent of India's Rudraksha. The Pauri Garhwal Rudraksha Growers Cooperative manages forest collection rights and supply chain transparency to prevent adulteration with Indonesian Rudraksha. Value addition includes graded bead stringing, authentication, and online direct-to-consumer spiritual products. The forest department manages sustainable harvest quotas to prevent overexploitation.
