Ramie (China Grass) Fibre Extraction — Assam

Contributed by System

Ramie (Boehmeria nivea), locally called China grass, is one of the strongest natural fibres — grown extensively in Assam and West Bengal. The perennial plant is cut 3–4 times/year. Stems are retted in water for 3–5 days, decorticator-processed to separate the long, lustrous fibres, degummed with soda ash, and dried. Ramie fibre is stronger than flax, more absorbent than cotton, and naturally resistant to bacteria. Used in high-end linen fabrics, industrial textiles, and blended yarn. Assam NRL cooperative develops ramie blended fabric for handloom weavers. ICAR Barapani has developed improved ramie varieties.
