Ramanagara Mulberry Silk Cocoon Market Karnataka

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Ramanagara district, formerly known as Silk City, is the world largest cocoon market, trading the mulberry silk cocoon produced by Karnataka sericulture farmers in the Bangalore Rural, Ramanagara, Kolar, and Mysuru districts, where the temperate climate and water availability support year-round mulberry cultivation and silk cocoon production on smallholder farms of 1 to 5 acres. The Ramanagara Reeling Market auctions between 50,000 and 80,000 kilograms of fresh cocoons daily when the market is in full operation, setting the price benchmark for Karnataka silk that drives the Mysore silk industry. The Karnataka silk value chain involves mulberry leaf cultivation on irrigated land, silkworm rearing on bamboo trays in sericulture rooms, cocoon reeling at cooperative filature units to produce raw silk yarn, and weaving at the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation looms in Mysuru and private handloom units. Karnataka produces approximately 70 percent of India total raw silk output and the Karnataka Sericulture Department maintains 300-plus sericulture extension offices across the state for seed, training, and health disease management support to the estimated 3 lakh sericulture farmer families.
