Rajkot Single Ikat Patola Silk Saree Surat Gujarat
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Rajkot and Surat produce single ikat patola silk sarees that are more affordable and more widely available than the double ikat Patan Patola, but are still hand-crafted artisan textiles with significant skill investment. In single ikat, only the weft threads are resist-dyed before weaving; the warp is plain. This produces a less precise pattern with a characteristic soft edge — the ikat blur — that is the aesthetic signature of the single ikat. Rajkot patola weavers come primarily from the Salvi community and have been producing single ikat sarees for over 200 years. The patterns derive from the same Patan tradition — Naari Kunja, Phool Veli, Chhabdi Bharat — but adapted for the single-resist technique. Rajkot patola is priced between Rs 5,000 and Rs 50,000 while Patan Patola commands Rs 1 lakh to Rs 15 lakh, making Rajkot patola accessible to a wider urban saree buyer. The Surat power-loom sector also produces machine-made imitation patola at Rs 500-2000 that threatens the handloom market. GI protection for Patan Patola specifically covers only the double ikat version from Patan. Rajkot handloom cooperative weavers supply to Gujarat emporiums and export directly to textile traders.
