Raichur Fort Bahmani Sultanate Architecture Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Raichur Fort, strategically located at the junction of the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers, was one of the most contested military sites in medieval Deccan India — fought over repeatedly between the Bahmani Sultanate, the Vijayanagara Empire, and the Bijapur Adil Shahis. The fort's massive mud and stone ramparts, constructed initially by the Warangal Kakatiyas and strengthened by the Bahmanis in the 14th century, follow the natural rocky outcrop above the city. The fort's Daftar-i-Diwan (administrative office) and Ek Minar mosque within the walls display the Bahmani Sultanate's distinctive Persian-influenced Deccan architectural vocabulary. The fort houses a small museum with artefacts from the medieval period and is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
