Karaikudi in Sivaganga district is the capital of the Chettiar (Nagarathar) community's Chettinad country — the cultural zone of magnificent 19th century merchant mansions built with Burma teak, Athangudi ceramic tiles, Karaikudi lime plaster, and imported European materials by Nagarathar traders who made fortunes in Southeast Asia trading. Chettinad cuisine — India's most complex and spice-intensive regional cuisine featuring 70+ individual spices, marathi mokku (kalpasi), kalpasi, star anise, and freshly ground masalas — has become one of India's iconic heritage food traditions served at heritage hotel restaurants in Karaikudi and Chennai. The Chettiar mansions, now converted to heritage hotels and museums, are extraordinary examples of vernacular merchant architecture.
