Paschim Medinipur Sabai Grass Rope Weaving Craft
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Paschim Medinipur district in southwest Bengal grows sabai grass (Eulaliopsis binata) on the laterite soils of the Jhargram-Medinipur plateau fringe, harvested by tribal women who weave the dry grass stems into coiled rope baskets, floor mats, trays, and utility items sold at weekly haath markets and urban craft stores. Sabai grass craft is primarily a women's livelihood in the Lodha, Santali, and Mahato communities of Paschim Medinipur, providing critical off-season income during the agricultural lean period. Midnapore town — the district headquarters — has a long revolutionary history as a centre of anti-colonial resistance, with the 1942 Quit India parallel government established in Tamluk subdivision being one of India's most significant local governance experiments of the freedom struggle.
