Powada: Marathi Historical Ballad Tradition of Osmanabad Region

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Powada is a Marathi oral-narrative performance form consisting of ballads that celebrate historical battles, military victories, and heroic deeds, particularly those of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and subsequent Maratha commanders. The form originated in the Maratha period as a means of motivating soldiers and honouring the fallen, and Osmanabad district, as part of the Marathwada region associated with Nizam rule, has a distinct tradition of powada celebrating resistance and identity. Professional powada performers (shahir, literally poet-soldier) deliver these narrative songs with drum accompaniment (dholki) and characteristic dramatic voice modulation. Powada is distinct from tamasha lavani in its martial, serious character. The shahir Annabhau Sathe, a Dalit poet from Osmanabad region, revolutionised the powada form by using it for social justice narratives, extending the form's historical function into contemporary political protest.
