Nuh Mewati Cattle Breed Ahirwal Region

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Nuh (Mewat) district in southern Haryana is part of the natural habitat of the Mewati cattle breed, a grey-white large-frame draft-dairy cattle maintained by Muslim Meo farming communities as a primary agricultural and pastoral animal. Mewati cattle have characteristic lyre-shaped horns, a large hump, and high tolerance for hot dry conditions, making them suited to the Aravalli foothills' semi-arid climate. The breed faces extinction pressure from cross-breeding with exotic cattle for higher milk yield; the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources at Karnal maintains a Mewati conservation herd and supports breed registry among Nuh district farmers.
