Godavari River Ecology in Nanded

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Godavari river, one of India's longest rivers, flows through Nanded district, supporting rich riparian ecology and traditional fishing communities. The Godavari at Nanded supports populations of mahseer (Tor khudree), catfish (Sperata seenghala), and the rohu and catla carp. The sacred bathing ghats at Nanded attract pilgrims who perform ritual bathing in the river, maintaining its cultural significance alongside ecological function. Traditional fishing communities (Koli Mahadeo and Gond fishers) use cast nets (jal), drag nets (badhawa), and bamboo fish traps in the river. The Jayakwadi dam system upstream on the Godavari has significantly altered the river's seasonal flow patterns, reducing peak floods and extending low-flow periods. The river's water quality in Nanded has declined due to upstream industrial and agricultural runoff, affecting both fisheries and ritual bathing traditions.
