Namakkal Fort Rock Temple — Narasimha Shrine Architecture
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Namakkal Narasimha Swamy temple and Hanuman shrine are cut into a massive granite boulder in the heart of Namakkal town, with the main sanctum occupying a natural rock-cut cave on the face of the 100-metre high inselberg. The Narasimha (man-lion form of Vishnu) deity carved in relief on the rock face is believed to be one of the largest rock-cut Narasimha images in India. The Hanuman statue — also rock-cut — faces the Narasimha, an unusual iconographic arrangement said to represent Hanuman's devotion. The fort atop the rock, built during the Vijayanagara period and later used by Tipu Sultan and the British, provides panoramic views of the surrounding plain. The rock temple is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
