Nagpur Orange Cultivation Vidarbha Maharashtra

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Nagpur orange (Citrus reticulata, the mandarinoid variety locally known as Nagpur Santra) is India's most famous citrus fruit and a GI-certified agricultural product of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, particularly Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, and Yavatmal districts, where it is cultivated on approximately 75,000 hectares by 100,000+ farming families. The Nagpur orange is distinguished from other Indian mandarin varieties by its characteristic loose, easy-peeling rind (the Kinnow mandarin, by contrast, has a tighter rind), deep orange-red fruit color, high juice content (42–48%), and specific terroir-driven sweetness-acidity balance that producers attribute to the unique black cotton soil (regur) of the Vidarbha plateau, with its high calcium and manganese content, and the moderate sub-tropical climate with dry winters and hot, dry pre-monsoon conditions that favor color development. Traditional Nagpur orange cultivation uses the dense planting system of 6×6 meter spacing without irrigation (rainfed) in the original practice, though modern cultivation uses drip irrigation and split fertilizer application. The Nagpur orange season peaks from late November to January, with the Karvand harvest creating the distinctive fresh market window that makes Nagpur orange synonymous with the Indian winter. The GI certification for Nagpur Orange was granted in 2014. The orange peel processing industry in Nagpur produces orange peel oil used globally in flavoring and cosmetics, making the full fruit utilization chain a significant value-added agro-processing cluster.
