Mysuru Dasara Royal Procession and Heritage Tradition
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Mysuru Dasara, held annually for ten days during Navaratri, is considered Karnataka's most important state festival and one of the grandest processions in India. The centrepiece is the procession of the golden howdah — a solid gold palanquin weighing 750 kg placed atop a caparisoned elephant and carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari — accompanied by hundreds of elephants, cavalry, brass bands, folk performers, and tableaux representing Karnataka's diversity. The procession tradition dates to the Vijayanagara empire and was continued by the Wadiyar dynasty rulers of Mysore. The Mysore Palace, illuminated by 100,000 bulbs during Dasara, is Karnataka's most visited heritage site. The festival drives a major economic boost for Mysuru's craft, hospitality, and cultural sectors.
