Muslin Jamdani Weaving Nadia West Bengal
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Jamdani is a fine cotton muslin weaving tradition of the Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal, closely related to the Dhaka Jamdani tradition of Bangladesh. Jamdani is woven on a handloom with a discontinuous supplementary weft technique where the motif thread is manually inserted with a needle only in the pattern zone, creating a floating floral design on the sheer cotton ground. The fineness of the yarn and the transparency of the weave require high skill. West Bengal's tradition of muslin weaving with fine local cotton has UNESCO recognition (shared with Bangladesh) for the Jamdani technique. Nadia Jamdani weavers supply fine fabric to luxury fashion designers and national handloom emporia. West Bengal Handloom Development Corporation supports weavers with yarn procurement and exhibition participation at Biswa Bangla craft fairs.
