Malda district in North Bengal is the state's premier sericulture (mulberry silk) district, where over 50,000 silkworm rearing families cultivate mulberry on the sandy char and upland soils of the Mahananda river basin, producing bivoltine cocoons that are reeled at silk reeling factories in English Bazar. Malda silk is woven into murshidabad-style silk fabric at Kaliachak and sold to weavers in Murshidabad and Bishrampur who produce Malda-sourced silk saris. The district's mango orchards covering 30,000+ hectares produce the Himsagar, Fazli (one of India's largest mango varieties), Khirsa, and Lakshmanbhog varieties that are sold at Malda's Amriti mango market — a major wholesale hub where thousands of tonnes are dispatched to Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai daily during the May-July season.
