Balasinor Dinosaur Fossil Heritage of Mahisagar

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Balasinor town in Mahisagar district sits near one of India's richest dinosaur fossil sites, known as India's Jurassic Park. The Rahioli village fossil site (shared between Mehsana and Mahisagar districts) contains thousands of titanosaur dinosaur eggs and bones from the late Cretaceous period. Excavations by the Geological Survey of India have revealed over ten distinct titanosaur species from these deposits. The fossil eggs, up to 20cm in diameter, are found in nesting colonies suggesting social dinosaur behaviour. The Dinosaur Fossil Park near Balasinor has been developed as an educational and tourism destination with a museum, fossil trail, and life-size dinosaur models. Local communities have traditional stories about the rounded fossil stones, associating them with the god Brahma's creation eggs. The site has created employment through tourism guiding, hospitality, and craft sales featuring dinosaur motifs on pottery and textiles.
