Mahendragarh Aravalli Sandstone Quarry Craft

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Mahendragarh district sits in the Aravalli range where yellow and red sandstone is quarried from hillside outcrops and cut into building blocks, floor tiles, and decorative panels used in Rajasthan's heritage-style architecture and exported to European landscaping markets. The stone-cutting craft community of Narnaul area chisels and shapes sandstone into temple carvings, jaali latticework screens, and ornamental garden elements using both traditional hand tools and modern diamond-blade machines. Mahendragarh sandstone is the same geological material as Rajasthan's famous pink sandstone; the quarry cluster provides livelihood to hundreds of families in the district's Aravalli belt villages.
