Madurai Sungudi Cotton Tie Dye Saree Tamil Nadu

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Sungudi is a traditional tie-and-dye cotton saree produced in Madurai, Sivaganagai, and Virudhunagar districts of Tamil Nadu using a technique where small circular dots (sundus) are pinched and tied before dyeing to create a distinctive dotted pattern. Artisans tie 500-1500 knots per saree depending on design complexity, then dip-dye in vibrant vegetable colours creating a galaxy of white dots on richly coloured ground. Sungudi sarees hold a Geographical Indication tag protecting Madurai-district origin. Cooperative weavers associated with the Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society produce Sungudi sarees for sale at Co-optex showrooms across Tamil Nadu and export buyers. The craft uses fine mill-spun cotton and is associated with Meenakshi temple festival traditions where devotees offer Sungudi sarees to the goddess.
