Lonar Crater Lake Ecology Buldhana Maharashtra

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Lonar Lake in Buldhana district of Maharashtra is one of the world's four hyper-velocity impact craters formed by a meteorite strike approximately 52,000 years ago, and the only known crater lake in basaltic rock in the world. The lake is fed by natural springs and is hyper-saline and alkaline (pH 10.5), creating a unique aquatic ecosystem that hosts extremophile microbial communities, endemic algae, and rare bird species adapted to saline-alkaline conditions. The surrounding crater forest (Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary, 143 hectares) protects a diverse population of langur, sambar, gazelle, wild boar, and over 160 bird species attracted to the water body. The microbial communities in Lonar Lake have been studied by NASA and Indian scientific institutions as analogues for life in extraterrestrial saline-alkaline environments such as Mars. The Lonar crater is also a Hindu sacred site: several small temples at the lake shore including a submerged Shiva temple visible at low water levels, making it simultaneously a scientific heritage and religious pilgrimage location. The Maharashtra government declared Lonar a Ramsar Wetland in 2020 for its ecological uniqueness. The lake's flamingo and migratory waterfowl populations attract birdwatchers from across India. Lonar is promoted as a science tourism destination for school and university groups.
