Kota Doria Cotton-Silk Weave of Rajasthan

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kota Doria is a lightweight check-weave fabric from Kota district of Rajasthan, distinguished by a transparent square pattern called khat formed by alternating cotton warp and silk weft threads. The khat squares give the fabric its airy translucency, making it ideal for the Rajasthan summer. Kaithun village near Kota city is the main production center with over 5000 weavers. The weaving uses a fly-shuttle pit loom. Fine counts of cotton and natural silk produce a delicate drape unlike any other Indian fabric. Kota Doria received GI certification. Saris, dupattas, and dress material are the main products. The fabric is sold at Kota markets and exported to buyers across India and internationally. Weavers of the Maheshwari community have traditionally practiced this craft for over three centuries.
