Khandwa Harda Nimar Cotton Soybean Farming Madhya Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Khandwa and Harda districts in the Nimar region on the Narmada plain between Vindhya and Satpura ranges grow cotton and soybean as the principal commercial crops on the region's black cotton soil (regur) that retains moisture from the 800-900mm monsoon and supports cotton boll development into December. The Narmada valley cotton is a medium-staple variety suited to the Vidarbha-Nimar belt, and local cotton ginning and pressing factories in Khandwa process the kapas (seed cotton) before despatch to mills in Ahmedabad and Surat. Harda is a significant soybean growing district — MP is India's largest soybean producer — supplying oil extraction plants in Indore and Bhopal that produce refined soybean oil and soy meal for poultry and aquaculture feed.
