Kaziranga Elephant Grass Reed Ecology Assam
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The tall elephant grass (Saccharum spontaneum) and reed beds of Kaziranga National Park in Assam form one of the most biodiverse grassland ecosystems on earth. These grasslands support the world largest population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, wild water buffalo, and eastern swamp deer. Local Mishing and Karbi communities have traditionally harvested reed and cane from buffer zones for boat-making and basket weaving, maintaining ecological knowledge about seasonal flood patterns. Conservation cooperatives now help communities earn income through eco-tourism and certified reed craft without harming core areas.
