Karnal Basmati Rice and NDRI Dairy Research

Karnal district is the global reference centre for Indian basmati rice, hosting the Directorate of Wheat Research and ICAR's Basmati Export Development Foundation whose scientists developed the Pusa Basmati 1121 and 1509 varieties that transformed India's rice export trade. The district's alluvial soils and canal infrastructure produce basmati that has made Karnal synonymous with premium Indian rice. Simultaneously, Karnal hosts the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) that developed Karnal butter technology and improved processing techniques adopted across India's cooperative dairy sector.
