Karimnagar Cotton Ikat and Handloom Cooperative Tradition
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Karimnagar district's weaving communities produce a cotton-based Ikat variant — less luxurious than Pochampally's silk Ikat but more affordable and widely worn for daily use. The cotton Ikat uses resist-tied yarn bundles dyed in 2–3 colours to create simple geometric patterns in checks, stripes, and diamonds. Karimnagar cotton Ikat sarees are sold at regional markets across Telangana. Several Karimnagar weaving families have shifted from purely traditional designs to fusion patterns incorporating contemporary colour palettes, expanding the market beyond traditional Telugu buyers.
