Jind Basmati Paddy Cultivation Haryana Ghaggar
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Jind district in central Haryana lies in the Ghaggar-Yamuna interfluve and grows Pusa Basmati 1121 and 1509 on canal-irrigated and tube-well-irrigated fields, contributing to Haryana's basmati export surplus. Jind's rice mandis at Narwana and Jind city are major procurement points where exporters compete for aromatic long-grain basmati during the October harvest. The district's water management challenge centres on paddy's high water demand depleting the groundwater table, and Jind farmers are the focus of the Haryana government's direct seeding of rice (DSR) programme that reduces water use by 25 percent compared to transplanting.
