Jamnapari Goat Rearing — Etawah Uttar Pradesh
Contributed by System
Jamnapari (Jamunapari) is India's most prized dual-purpose goat breed — tall, long-eared, and high-yielding. Originally from Etawah (UP), it produces 1.5–3 litres milk/day and excellent meat. The breed is exported to Southeast Asia for goat improvement programs. Small-holder goat rearing is often managed by women as it requires low capital and provides income, manure, and insurance against crop failure. Male kids sold at Eid command ₹8,000–20,000. Cooperative models supply Jamnapari kids to tribal farmers across UP, MP, and Rajasthan for upgrading local herds. CIRG Makhdoom (Mathura) is the premier research institute.
