Jabalpur Marble Rocks Bhedaghat Narmada Gorge Madhya Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Jabalpur district on the Narmada river is the site of Bhedaghat marble rocks — dramatic white crystalline marble gorge walls rising 25 metres on both sides of the Narmada, illuminated silver in moonlight — a natural heritage site and tourist attraction where boat rides through the gorge are offered. Jabalpur marble is carved by Patheria and Vishwakarma caste stone workers into Narmada shivling (marble Shiva lingam), decorative bowls, and chess sets sold at Bhedaghat crafts markets and shipped to temples across India. The Narmada river at Jabalpur is a major pilgrimage zone — the Tilwara and Gwari ghat are cremation and shraddh sites — and the district's Dhuandhar waterfall (where the Narmada narrows and roars through the marble gorge) is one of Madhya Pradesh's most popular tourist attractions.
