Marble Craft and Stone Inlay Tradition of Bhedaghat Jabalpur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The artisans of Bhedaghat have shaped Narmada marble for at least five centuries. White statuary marble is quarried in blocks and worked by chisel, grinder, and diamond blade into temple idols, decorative panels, and household items. Inlay work uses coloured stone chips — green serpentine, red sandstone, black basalt — set into white marble surfaces mimicking Mughal pietra dura but with distinctly Bundeli motifs: peacocks, lotuses, and geometric interlace. The craft is hereditary, passed father to son within Vishwakarma families. Finishing involves progressive sanding with increasingly fine abrasives, followed by polishing with oxalic acid powder to bring out the translucent glow of Narmada marble. Wholesale buyers from Delhi and Mumbai source religious statuary here for temple installation across India.
