Itanagar Adi Cane Bamboo Craft Arunachal Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Adi tribal communities in East Siang and Lower Siang districts of Arunachal Pradesh are masters of cane weaving, producing the iconic Adi shawl bag called galuk, bamboo water containers, and sleeping mats. Adi weavers select thin cane strips and bamboo splints and interlace them using traditional body-tension backstrap techniques for tightly packed waterproof weaves. The Itanagar government cooperative emporium Poonam stocks Adi cane and bamboo products from cooperative artisan centres. Adi women produce woollen blankets alongside cane goods as seasonal income. The craft cooperative federates through Arunachal Pradesh Crafts Development Board in Naharlagun. Export buyers from Japan, Germany, and USA purchase galuk bags and cane chairs through Itanagar cooperative outlets.
