Penganga River Ecology and Water Heritage of Hingoli
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Penganga river, a major tributary of the Godavari, forms the northern boundary of Hingoli district and creates a rich riverine ecosystem. The Penganga in this stretch supports populations of mugger crocodile, smooth-coated otter, and rich freshwater fish diversity including catla, rohu, and the prized mahseer. Traditional fishing communities (Koli and Gond) use seasonal fishing methods timed to fish breeding cycles. The Isapur dam on the Penganga in adjacent Yavatmal district stores water for Hingoli's canal irrigation. The Penganga river valley's drawdown cultivation, practiced on receding floodwaters in October-November, produces traditional food crops including watermelon and jowar without any irrigation input. Sacred teertha (ford) sites on the Penganga are local pilgrimage destinations. Community-based water users' associations manage Hingoli's canal distribution using computerised warabandi schedules.
