Renuka Lake Sacred Ecology and Pilgrimage Sirmaur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Renuka lake in Sirmaur district is the largest natural lake in Himachal Pradesh and one of India's sacred lakes associated with the legend of goddess Renuka. The lake's shape is believed to resemble a reclining woman as the goddess herself. The adjacent wildlife sanctuary protects lake ecology and the forests supporting diverse bird species. The annual Renuka fair in November attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees in one of the state's largest religious gatherings. Traditional boat rides on the lake maintain a practice connecting communities to this sacred water body. The lake ecosystem is protected through both religious reverence preventing pollution and formal wildlife sanctuary regulations. The confluence of conservation, religious sentiment, and community stewardship creates effective multi-layered protection.
