Kinnauri Shawl Weaving: Himalayan Textile Excellence

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kinnauri shawls woven in the high-altitude Kinnaur district are among India's finest traditional textiles, distinguished by intricate geometric patterns, exceptional wool quality combining Pashmina-grade fibre with Angora wool, and sophisticated multicolour designs. The distinctive Kinnauri cap (Topi) with velvet band and the traditional Pattu fabric are also produced here. Kinnauri women weave at traditional frame looms creating patterns of extraordinary complexity from memory, with each design containing cultural meanings and family-specific elements. The cold dry climate of Kinnaur valley and surrounding high-altitude areas produces wool with fineness approaching Pashmina quality. GI tag protection distinguishes authentic Kinnauri products from imitations. The weaving economy supports families in this remote district where agricultural options are limited.
