Khajjiar Mini Switzerland Meadow and Forest Heritage Kangra
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Khajjiar in Kangra district nicknamed the Switzerland of India features a high-altitude meadow surrounded by deodar forests with a small lake at its centre creating a landscape of European pastoral beauty. The meadow ecosystem supports rich grassland flora including medicinal herbs and wildflowers. Traditional community rights to meadow grazing and forest products have shaped this landscape over generations. The deodar forests surrounding Khajjiar represent old-growth stands maintained through traditional sacred grove practices prohibiting cutting of large trees. Tourism development around Khajjiar has created livelihoods while protecting the meadow from agricultural conversion. The landscape demonstrates how traditional reverence for natural beauty, formalised through cultural prohibitions on exploitation, can effectively conserve ecosystems in the absence of formal protected area status.
