Chamba Rumal: Royal Embroidery Masterpiece
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Chamba Rumal is a unique embroidery art form from Chamba district featuring double-satin stitch embroidery on unbleached cloth (khadi), creating identical designs on both sides of the fabric. These large square or rectangular cloths traditionally illustrated scenes from the Ramayana, Krishna Leela, and Mahabharata inspired by Pahari miniature paintings. Executed by women of the royal household and noble families historically, the tradition now continues among trained artisans. The characteristic aesthetic features flat even stitches covering the entire ground cloth, bold primary colours using silk thread, and no shading or perspective consistent with the Pahari painting tradition. Chamba Rumal earned GI status and UNESCO recognition. Contemporary practitioners are reviving this tradition through training institutions and market support programs.
