Haveri Bold Groundnut Cold Press Oil Ghani Karnataka

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Haveri district in north Karnataka's dry zone is a major producer of Bold groundnut cultivated on black cotton soil under rainfed conditions, with the district contributing significantly to Karnataka's groundnut oil press volume through traditional cold-press wooden ghani mills. Cold-press groundnut oil — called yellu yenne or mara chekku enne in Kannada — is produced by oilseed pressing cooperatives and individual oilmen using ox-driven or motorised wooden screw presses that extract oil without heat, preserving the natural roasted flavour, vitamin E content, and yellow colour that distinguishes it from solvent-extracted commercial oil. A typical cold-press ghani processes 20-25 kg of shelled groundnut per hour, yielding approximately 40% oil by weight. Haveri groundnut oil is prized in north Karnataka households for stir-fry, tempering, and pickle preparation. NAFED and APMC procurement at Haveri market yard establishes floor prices, and surplus is sold through cooperative oil depots in Hubli-Dharwad. Karnataka Agro Industries has supported ghani cooperative formation in Haveri to enable direct-to-consumer cold-press oil marketing under certified labels.
