Gorakhpur Terracotta Toy Horse Elephant Craft Uttar Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh is renowned for its Gorakhpur terracotta toys — brightly painted clay figurines of horses, elephants, peacocks, and human figures made by Prajapati potters in Aurangabad village near Gorakhpur town using local red clay, hand-modelled and painted with white slip and mineral colours. The toy-making tradition is linked to the Gorakhnath temple's annual Khichdi Mela fair where terracotta toys are sold as auspicious gifts and children's offerings to the Nath sect deity. Distinct from other UP terracotta is Gorakhpur's use of a pink-to-red firing colour from local iron-rich clay combined with thick white chalk slip backgrounds that make the painted details vivid. The toys are not kiln-fired to stoneware temperature — a low-temperature firing at 700°C preserves the porous clay texture. Gorakhpur terracotta has a GI tag and is sold through UP Handcraft Development Corporation, with master potter families like the Rajbhar community maintaining traditional figurine form vocabulary over generations.
