Goa Konkani Fish Curry Coconut Rice Coastal Cuisine
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Goan Konkani cuisine, shared between the Catholic and Hindu communities with regional variations, is defined by fresh coastal seafood cooked in freshly grated coconut, Goa chilli (Kashmiri and Byadgi), tamarind, and kokum. Fish curry-rice (masala ni kadi), xacuti, cafreal, and balchao are pillars of Goan cooking. The Catholic and GSB Hindu Konkani kitchen traditions diverge in the use of pork, beef, toddy vinegar, and feni in cooking. Goan fishing cooperative societies in Panaji, Margao, and Vasco supply fresh kingfish, mackerel, sardine, and pomfret to local restaurants, markets, and export ice plants. Goa Tourism Cooperative promotes Konkan food trails for culinary tourists from across India and internationally.
