Gambhira Mask Making and Dance of Malda West Bengal

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Gambhira is a ritual mask dance tradition from Malda district of West Bengal associated with the worship of Shiva in his fierce Gambhira (grim) aspect. The masks — representing Shiva, his consort, and folk demons — are crafted from paper pulp, clay, and cloth, painted in bold red, white, and black pigments. The Gambhira dance is performed during Chaitra month (April) as a social satire and prayer for rain. The mask-making craft is practiced by Muslim artisans (Sutradhar community) who have historically provided masks for both Hindu and Muslim community festivals in Malda. The tradition is unique in representing Hindu-Muslim shared craft production. Gambhira mask making is listed as an intangible cultural heritage by West Bengal. Contemporary artisans produce decorative masks for the tourism and export market. The Malda district craft council provides marketing support.
