Fatehgarh Sahib Handloom Cotton Weaving

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Fatehgarh Sahib's small handloom sector is concentrated in villages near Sirhind where Khatri and Julaha weaver families produce cotton khes, daris, and dhotar cloth on pit looms using locally spun yarn. The weavers of Sirhind historically produced cotton fabric for the Fatehpur Mughal sarkar's revenue zone and maintained weaving traditions that survived Partition better than in border districts because the weaver community here remained largely intact. Small cooperative groupings of handloom weavers in Fatehgarh Sahib supply handloom shops in Chandigarh and participate in Punjab state handloom exhibitions.
