Faridabad Surajkund Ancient Reservoir Water Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Surajkund, meaning Sun Tank, is an early medieval reservoir constructed by the Tomara Rajput ruler Surajpal in the 10th century near Faridabad, designed to harvest monsoon runoff from the Aravalli Hills in a carefully engineered embankment that held water for year-round irrigation. The tank fell into disuse after the Tughlaq period and was partially restored by the Haryana government as a heritage site adjacent to the crafts mela grounds. The engineering of Surajkund represents the sophisticated pre-colonial water harvesting tradition of the Aravalli foothills that maintained agriculture in an otherwise seasonally arid landscape.
