Perundurai Thirumoorthy Temple Granite Architecture, Erode
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Thirumoorthy (Shiva) temple at Perundurai in Erode district represents a fine example of Vijayanagara-period Dravidian temple architecture in the Kongu Nadu style. The granite mandapam (pillared hall) features rows of monolithic pillars carved with rearing horses, mythological figures, and fine floral scrollwork — characteristic of 15th–16th century Kongu region temple building. Local Kamsala (craftsman caste) sculptors using chisels and mallets create these carvings from pink granite quarried in the nearby Shevaroy ranges. The temple's tank (pushkarini) is fed by a channel from the Cauvery canal system and is maintained by the community for ritual bathing. Temple sculpture workshops in Erode town continue to produce granite images and pillars for new temples across South India.
