Javvadu Hills Forest Ecology and Tribal Honey of Erode
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Javvadu Hills and Sathuragiri range on Erode district's eastern border with Villupuram support dry deciduous forests where tribal Malayali and Irula communities have harvested forest products for generations. Wild honey collection from rock cliff hives and tall Terminalia trees is a hereditary skill, with honey hunters using smoke torches and bamboo ladders in night operations. The honey is prized for its medicinal properties and complex floral character. Tribal communities also harvest Amla (Indian gooseberry), Nelli (Phyllanthus) leaves, and Silambu bark from the forests for sale to Siddha medicine manufacturers in Erode. The forest patches support populations of slender loris, and tribal communities maintain traditional prohibitions on hunting this protected species.
