Durg Bhilai Steel Plant Chhattisgarh Industrial Heritage

Bhilai in Durg district is home to the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) — one of India's largest integrated steel plants built with Soviet cooperation (1959) — a 20,000-acre township that became a model of industrial society in post-independence India, with worker housing, hospitals, schools, sports facilities, and cultural centres built by the Steel Authority of India (SAIL). The BSP township has a distinct working-class culture shaped by migration from across India — Oraon and Chhattisgarhi tribals worked alongside Bengali, Tamil, Punjabi, and Bihari engineers and workers — creating a multicultural community where languages and food traditions blend. Durg district grows sugarcane in its Sheonath river basin and has a tradition of jaggery production in seasonal gur mills.
