Dumka Upland Rainfed Rice Tribal Farming

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Dumka district's Santhal Parganas landscape of forested hills and valley flats supports upland rainfed rice cultivation by Santhal and Paharia tribal communities who grow traditional short-duration local varieties adapted to the district's monsoon rainfall pattern of 1,200 to 1,400 mm. Tribal farmers in Dumka use the dali system of cooperative labour exchange where a group of five to ten households work each other's fields in turns during peak transplanting and harvest periods, distributing labour burden without cash payment. The Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act (1949) protects tribal land from alienation, preserving the land base for traditional subsistence rice farming in Dumka's hills.
